i didn't do as well as i should have this semester. i'm pissed because i can't blame anyone but myself. it make me remember all the things that happened to our people who were trying to make it in this country and i go and squander the opportunity.

i got to get on top of things and not just be mediocre in the middle some where, i got to get on it and stay on it. Procrastination is something i need to work on. i need to have that mandela attributed quote they put in akeelah and the bee tattooed on my forehead.

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

--Nelson Mandela, 1994 South African Presidential Inaugural Speech, quoting spiritual leader Marianne Williamson of the Church of Today in Detroit.

Just think of it this way... it wasn't a mediocre dissertation.. they wont even let that shit happen! Its only the first year. Give yourself some credit.

i'm with u, moya. i haven't even checked my grades yet cause i don't want to deal with it. i guess all we can do is step our game up for the summer and come back on point in the fall.

you DO have it honey! everything you need to thrive is with you right now. soar. and compassion, particularly for the self, is highly, highly underrated. you did the best you knew how to do with the tools you had at the time. what more is there to ask for?

(p.s. the quote that's often attributed to nelson was really written by the incredible marianne williamson. she's the shit if you're ever looking for some deep ass motivation!)

love.

ay yo. you're good; i promise. when you go onto the market (i hate that phrase), they will not be checking for your transcipt that hard.

that said, as long as you keep doing you, you will be a credit to "the race". more people than you know are so incredibly proud of you already.

ps: if you need a pep talk, or a(nother) sympathetic ear from someone going through the same fire, please let me know. i ain't one for phone talking, but you can always dial my digits. i'm no master of this game, but i'm definitely wiser than i was several years ago. if what i know will help, i'll extend that knowledge to you. that's real talk.

ahh don't worry 'bout it. it was your frist year. i felt myself slipping late in the semester too, but it's all good. it's just getting over the procrastination--seriously.

luckily, you have a lot more things to attribute to your degree (dissertation, conferences, pubications, etc) than just grades. and summer is right, once you are ready to go on the market (i hate that term, too)--grades will not be the most important thing that will be looked at.

fall semster is in a few months, ready to start all over again. one year down, you now know what to do.

black women gettin' phd's....i love it.
